On Monday, November 6, 2023, Lieutenant Mel Ortiz was sworn in as Chief of Police for the Village of Summit. Ortiz has been acting as interim chief since May of 2022 for the department. Ortiz has been serving the community as a police officer for 25 years and has filled many roles including patrolman, sergeant, detective sergeant, lieutenant, swat officer, major crimes investigator, and training officer. Chief Ortiz has a master's degree in public safety administration and is a graduate of Northwestern University's, School of Police Staff and Command. Chief Ortiz thanked the Mayor, Trustees, his family and all the attendees who showed up in support. Chief Ortiz stated that he is hoping to continue helping the department move forward to better serve the community.
