The North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) School Resource Officer Unit was notified that a report was made to Hursey Montessori School staff by an 11-year-old student, stating that a handgun was inside their bookbag. The weapon was safely recovered, and at no point were there any threats made towards staff or students. Initial findings suggest that an adult may have used the student's backpack and possibly placed the firearm inside. Upon discovering the handgun, the student promptly notified school staff.
The juvenile was taken into custody without incident and charged with possessing a weapon on school property and being a minor in possession of a firearm. The juvenile was released on a promise to appear at all future court hearings. The investigation is ongoing to determine the adult's involvement in placing the handgun in the bookbag.
NCPD is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and staff within our community.
