A 911 call was received by the North Charleston Police Department reporting that a Northwoods Middle School student had a handgun in a classroom. Responding Patrol Officers and the School Resource Officer quickly made contact with the suspected student, conducting a search that revealed a loaded handgun concealed on their person. The student was taken into custody, and the weapon was safely secured. There is no indication that any threats were made in connection with the handgun. The school staff and officers collaborated to quickly and safely restore normal operations.
The student was taken into custody without incident and charged with possessing a weapon on school property and being a minor in possession of a firearm. The juvenile was subsequently lodged with the Department of Juvenile Justice.
