On the afternoon of Thursday, September 25, 2025, officers with the North Charleston Police Department responded to a 911 call regarding a disturbance at the CVS Pharmacy located at 5215 Ashley Phosphate Road.
The caller reported that a male individual inside the store was yelling, using profane language, and had allegedly threatened staff. It was also indicated that the individual may have been armed with a knife. This information was immediately relayed to responding officers.
Upon arrival, officers encountered a juvenile matching the suspect description. The individual was uncooperative and resisted officers’ attempts to detain him. Officers exercised restraint and caution throughout the encounter, allowing them to safely bring the situation under control. The juvenile was taken into custody without injury.
Due to rising tensions at the scene, the individual was transported to a secure location and later released to a parent on a custodial promise for charges of Assault 3rd Degree and Breach of Peace.
A thorough investigation followed, including a review of available surveillance footage and body-worn camera recordings. No knife was located.
In accordance with department policy, incidents involving any use of force are reviewed by our Office of Professional Standards (Internal Affairs) and the Use of Force Training Unit—No policy violations were identified.
We understand that this incident has raised questions within our community, especially given that it involved a juvenile. While there have been reports that the individual may have been selling candy, that detail remains unconfirmed.
Please note, it is acceptable to record video during police interactions to promote accountability and clarity. However, verbal confrontations and physical actions during such situations can escalate tensions and often do not contribute to de-escalating the situation.
The North Charleston Police Department will continue to serve with integrity, protect our residents, and support the well-being of our community.
