The North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) proudly salutes Sgt. Diego Lizarazo, a finalist in the Governor’s Law Enforcement Officer of the Year ceremony. Sgt. Lizarazo was one of three finalists in the Municipal Officer category.
On April 19, 2025, officers responded to a report of a man in distress on the Ashley Phosphate Road overpass attempting to jump onto I-26. When Sgt. Lizarazo arrived, he observed the man straddling the bridge railing.
After calmly asking if he could approach, Sgt. Lizarazo was given permission to come closer. Through compassion, patience, and quick action, he was able to safely help the man off the railing and prevent a tragedy. Sgt. Lizarazo then offered the man a hug and words of encouragement.
Because of Sgt. Lizarazo’s heroic actions, a life was saved that day. He was later honored with the agency’s Lifesaving Award and nominated by the South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police for the state award.
Congratulations, Sgt. Lizarazo, on this well-deserved recognition. NCPD also congratulates all of the winners and nominees recognized during Tuesday’s ceremony.
