The North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) is joining forces with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to raise awareness about the importance of rail-safety education and promote caution near highway-rail grade crossings and railroad rights-of-way. Accidents at these intersections are the second leading cause of rail-related deaths in the United States, and it's crucial that we take action to prevent them.
In 2025, FRA statistics revealed a staggering 2,274 highway-rail grade crossing collisions, resulting in 285 fatalities and 766 injuries across the country. These numbers are a sobering reminder of the need for increased awareness and education on rail safety.
As a community, we must work together to prevent these avoidable tragedies. By staying alert, following safety guidelines, and being mindful of our surroundings, we can significantly reduce the risk of accidents at highway-rail grade crossings.
Remember, safety is everyone's responsibility. Let's look out for each other and make a conscious effort to stay safe near railroad tracks.
