North Charleston Police Department Statement
At approximately 2:30 a.m. this morning, officers with the North Charleston Police Department responded to reports of a male individual, who had parked his vehicle and was sitting on the exterior of the Don Holt Bridge, threatening to jump.
Officers immediately established communication and worked tirelessly to ensure the individual’s safety. After an extended and coordinated effort, the individual attempted to jump; however, due to the quick actions and professionalism of our officers and an assisting civilian professional, they were able to safely intervene and bring him to safety. The individual is now receiving the appropriate assistance and support.
As a result of this incident, the Don Holt Bridge was closed for several hours, causing significant traffic delays. We sincerely thank members of the community for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during this difficult situation.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to our surrounding law enforcement agencies, fire and rescue personnel, first responders, and Mobile Crisis for their invaluable assistance and collaboration.
We recognize that the holiday season can be especially challenging for many individuals. If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. You can call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, to connect with trained counselors 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Once again, we appreciate the community’s understanding and apologize for any inconvenience caused by this morning’s incident.
