On Sunday October 25th, a North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) officer was involved in a shooting incident in the 5300 block of Charter Drive.
Preliminary information that can be released is a NCPD officer responded to a stabbing around 5pm. During the investigation, the suspect barricaded themselves inside a residence with a hostage. Crisis Negotiators and our SWAT Team responded. When negotiations failed, our SWAT team breached the residence resulting in an officer discharging their firearm, resulting in gunshot injuries to the suspect. Despite life saving measures by First Responders already on scene, the suspect was pronounced deceased. The hostage was safely removed from the residence and treated by First Responders.
NCPD is conducting an investigation into the stabbing, with the assistance of Charleston County Coroner's Office. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been notified and will also be conducting an independent investigation of our use of force.
NCPD is committed to transparency and will provide additional information as the investigation allows.
This is an ongoing investigation, and further details will be released as appropriate.
