The North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) participated in a coordinated, multi-jurisdictional enforcement operation targeting illegal street racing and reckless driving on June 27.
The operation was conducted in partnership with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, Charleston County Sheriff's Office, Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, Summerville Police Department, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and South Carolina Highway Patrol. It followed months of investigation, including intelligence gathered by undercover officers.
As a result of the operation, five individuals were arrested and charged with violating the South Carolina Roadway Protection and Safety Act.
Investigators received intelligence that organized street racing groups planned to gather at multiple locations throughout the region on June 27. Participants ultimately assembled in a private parking lot in the Camp Hall area, where investigators observed multiple vehicles engaging in dangerous driving behaviors, including burnouts, doughnuts, speed contests, and other reckless driving exhibitions.
Earlier that evening, investigators also observed one vehicle traveling in excess of 100 mph on Interstate 26 while weaving through traffic with no regard for the safety of other motorists.
After gathering sufficient evidence, law enforcement officers secured the area and safely arrested the five individuals allegedly involved.
Deputy Chief Rick Keys represented the North Charleston Police Department during a news conference this morning announcing the arrests.
The North Charleston Police Department remains committed to working with its law enforcement partners to identify and hold accountable those who participate in illegal street racing and reckless driving, which place motorists, pedestrians, and the community at risk.
