The North Charleston Police Department NCPD) held a news conference Tuesday morning to address a rise in firearm thefts from vehicles and a recent increase in fatal traffic crashes involving both motorists and pedestrians.
Chief Ron Camacho, Crime Prevention Officer Josh Silva, and Deputy Chief Rick Keys shared statistics and safety concerns, urging residents and visitors to take precautions to help reduce crime and improve roadway safety.
According to Silva, 58 firearms have been reported stolen from vehicles in North Charleston so far this year. Of those thefts, 54 involved vehicles that had been left unlocked.
Officials encouraged vehicle owners to lock their doors, remove valuables from sight, and securely store firearms to help prevent theft.
Deputy Chief Keys also highlighted a troubling increase in traffic fatalities, noting that five people have been killed in crashes during the past three weeks alone.
Keys urged drivers to slow down, remain attentive behind the wheel, and avoid using cell phones while driving. He also encouraged pedestrians to stay alert when crossing roadways and to use marked crosswalks and designated intersections whenever possible.
Department leaders said they hope increased public awareness will help reduce preventable crimes and traffic deaths throughout the city. We thank our media partners for helping share the safety message with the community.
