Today the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) celebrates International Bagpipe Day, honoring the history, heritage, and music of the Great Highland Bagpipe. We’re proud to recognize Sgt. James F. Ryan III, whose dedication to both music and service represents the best of our department.
Sgt. Ryan represents the department at numerous public safety ceremonies and civic events across South Carolina and beyond, all while continuing his responsibilities as a patrol sergeant.
Although bagpipes are often associated with memorial services, Sgt. Ryan is quick to remind people that the instrument is also heard at many joyful occasions. He has been a student of the Great Highland Bagpipe since 2000, when he began learning with the Charleston Police Pipes & Drums—now known as the Charleston Pipe Band—following the passing of his father, a fellow lawman and bagpiper from Brooklyn, New York City.
Today, Sgt. Ryan continues his father’s legacy by performing with the very same set of bagpipes his dad once played. One day, he hopes to pass those pipes on to his own son, continuing the tradition for another generation.
With St. Patrick's Day just around the corner, you’ll likely be hearing plenty of bagpipe music in the days ahead—and you might even spot Sgt. Ryan performing around town.
Happy International Bagpipe Day, and enjoy the music! 🎶☘️
