As winter's chill sets in again, the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) reminds residents to prioritize their safety during Winter cold weather. With temperatures plummeting, it's crucial to heed important safety tips to stay protected.

• Remember & check on vulnerable populations: elderly, children, the ill, the unhoused, and pets
• Dress in layers & cover exposed skin
• Limit or avoid time outdoors
• Wind chills make it feel colder to the body
• Keep anything that can burn (bedding, clothing, curtains) at least 3ft away from space heaters
• Plug portable heaters directly into outlets, avoid using extension cords or power strips
• If using a fireplace, ensure the fire is completely out before going to sleep or leaving your home
• Drip your faucets to hopefully prevent frozen pipes

For the unhoused, the Holy City Missions Winter Warming Shelter at Aldersgate Church (1444 Remount Rd, North Charleston) will open overnight this week. Registration will be from 7-9pm and CARTA will offer free transportation via route 13 only. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Pets are not permitted.
