North Charleston Police (NCPD) arrested a 39-year-old James Island man on August 29th after officers allegedly discovered drugs concealed on him while he was being booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center for Driving Under Suspension 1st Offense.
According to police, officers were conducting patrols shortly before 7:30 p.m. near Spruill Avenue and Baxter Street, in the Chicora-Cherokee community, when they observed a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction on Spruill Avenue. An officer noticed the vehicle's window tint appeared to be darker than the legal limit and conducted a U-turn before initiating a traffic stop with blue lights and sirens.
The driver was identified as 39-year-old Sheldon Lamar Welcome, who told officers he did not have a valid identification card. A records check reportedly showed that Welcome's driver's license was suspended indefinitely for failing to pay traffic tickets. He was subsequently placed under arrest for Driving Under Suspension.
While being transported to the jail, Welcome told the officer that he had drugs concealed in his groin area. Officers conducted a probable-cause search in the jail's sally port and reportedly recovered a small, clear bag containing 38 purple, diamond-shaped pills marked with an "S."
A search of a purple plastic tube that was not transparent allegedly revealed another small clear bag containing green plant material, along with seven additional diamond-shaped pills and one star-shaped pill.
Police said all 46 pills field-tested presumptively positive for MDMA and Fentanyl.
Welcome was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center and additionally charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute MDMA and Trafficking Fentanyl.
