On Wednesday around 6:30 p.m., officers from the Central Evenings Team 1 conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that had just left the campus of Trident Technical College.

The vehicle had committed several traffic violations and was seen driving erratically before stopping near Ashley Phosphate Road and Stafford Street.

Driver Behavior

• Officers reported the driver appeared nervous and shaky while trying to retrieve his license from a stack of cards he was using as a wallet.
• He was sweating and coughing, which he attributed to an ear infection.
• Officers also said they smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Weapons Found

• The driver told officers there was a handgun on the front seat under a towel.
  • The handgun had one round in the chamber and five rounds in the magazine.
• During a probable cause search, officers found:
  • Five additional loaded pistol magazines in the driver's door pocket
  • Two knives (blades longer than two inches) inside a lunchbox
  • A stun gun
• In the trunk, officers located a PSA AK rifle with:
  • 11 loaded magazines
  • 305 total live rounds

Suspect

• The driver was identified as 64-year-old Jeffrey O'Dell, who told officers he is an employee of the college.

Charge

• O'Dell was charged with Possession of a Firearm on School Property and transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center.
