A 42-year-old North Charleston woman was arrested early Friday morning after police said she was driving 100 mph in a posted 60 mph zone on Interstate 26 while under the influence of alcohol.
North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) officers were patrolling westbound I-26 near Remount Road around 2:15 a.m. when they observed an SUV traveling at a high rate of speed.
An officer got behind the vehicle and reported that the driver repeatedly failed to maintain her lane. While pacing the SUV, the officer estimated its speed at approximately 100 mph in the posted 60 mph zone.
Officers initiated a traffic stop and reported smelling alcohol coming from the vehicle. They also observed a small glass cup holder near the driver that appeared to contain scotch.
The driver, identified as Kadeshia Elaine Campbell, reportedly told officers she had consumed a couple of drinks earlier.
Police said Campbell was slurring her words and explained that she was speeding because she needed to use the restroom but had failed to exit the Interstate.
When asked to step out of the vehicle, Campbell allegedly stumbled and appeared significantly off balance, according to officers.
Campbell agreed to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. Following the tests, officers determined that her ability to operate a vehicle had been materially and appreciably impaired by alcohol and/or drugs.
Campbell was arrested and transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center. At the detention center, she agreed to provide a breath sample, which reportedly registered 0.18% blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Her BAC was over twice the legal limit.
In addition to Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Campbell faces charges of:
