Ah yes… the newest scandal in town: the big, scary armored vehicle.
Let’s get a few things out of the way first: No, the BearCat will not be showing up when you report your lawn gnome stolen, and no, it’s not rolling down Market Street looking for parking violations.
“Why do they need that?!”
Because the world isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. When things go bad, they go bad fast.
We’re talking armed threats, barricaded subjects, severe weather rescues, situations where a regular patrol car is about as useful as an umbrella in a hurricane.
“But it looks so militarized!”
Right, because nothing says “battlefield” like rescuing people during floods, getting EMS safely to patients, or not getting shot during an armed standoff.
Turns out, equipment designed to keep people alive isn’t always cute and friendly.
“Taxpayer money wasted!”
Except… it’s not.
This BearCat is fully funded through a state grant, money that cannot be used for anything else.
Could that funding exist without taxpayers? No.
Could it be spent on something else locally? Also no.
Not roads. Not parks. Not a police station. And certainly not your favorite pet project.
Use it or lose it.
“That’s excessive!”
Until you’ve been shot at or had rounds going off on scene, you wouldn’t understand.
Funny how a giant shield starts making sense when bullets are involved.
In those moments, it’s not excessive; it's lifesaving.
“They’re going to use it all the time!”
Nope.
It’s not for routine patrol, traffic stops, or making a grand entrance at Sheetz.
It’s for the worst-case scenarios everyone hopes never happen, but expects police to handle perfectly if they do.
“Why not just borrow one?”
Great question.
Because waiting on another county during a critical incident is a bit like calling your neighbor to borrow a fire extinguisher after your kitchen is already on fire.
Minutes matter.
Blunt truth:
Most people don’t care if police are under-equipped… right up until the moment something serious happens. Then suddenly the question becomes, “Why weren’t they prepared?”
The BearCat isn’t about intimidation.
It’s about protection for Police, Fire, EMS, and yes, the same community it serves.
No drama. No apocalypse. No conspiracy.
Just another tool for the rare days when “normal” goes out the window. But hey, if we ever figure out how to stop bullets with optimism, we’ll be sure to let you know.
We hope you never experience a situation where a BearCat is needed for you or your family.
But if that day comes, you’ll be glad it’s there.
