The Lycoming Regional Police Department is bringing attention to a growing concern: the rise of Nihilistic Violent Extremist (NVE) groups targeting young people. These groups often operate online, exploiting feelings of isolation and disillusionment to promote a worldview rooted in hopelessness and violence.
As parents, you play a crucial role in protecting your children. We encourage you to:
- Monitor Digital Footprints: Be aware of the platforms your children use and the content they consume. Look for sudden changes in their online behavior or the use of coded language and symbols.
- Foster Open Dialogue: Create a safe space for your children to discuss what they see online. Ask open-ended questions about their interests and the influencers they follow.
- Watch for Behavioral Shifts: Extremist grooming often leads to drastic changes, such as social withdrawal, increased hostility, or an obsession with violent imagery and "doom-focused" ideologies.
- Promote Critical Thinking: Help your children understand how algorithms can lead them to extremist content and teach them to question the motives behind the media they encounter.
