The Lycoming Regional Police Department is reminding all firearm owners and recreational shooters to make safety their top priority whenever target shooting.
Recently, our department has investigated two separate incidents in which homes were struck by stray bullets. Thankfully, no one was injured; however, these incidents could have easily resulted in serious injury or loss of life.
Before engaging in any target shooting activity, please remember:
✅ Know Your Surroundings – Be aware of what is beyond and around your target. Never assume an area is clear. Consider nearby homes, roads, trails, and other locations where people may be present.
✅ Use an Appropriate Backstop – Ensure your target is positioned in front of a substantial backstop capable of safely stopping the ammunition being used. Dirt berms are generally preferred. Never rely on trees, brush, or makeshift barriers to stop bullets.
✅ Be Certain of Your Target and Beyond – Every shooter is responsible for where their projectile ultimately comes to rest. If you cannot safely account for the bullet's path, do not take the shot.
✅ Follow All Firearm Safety Rules – Handle every firearm responsibly and ensure all shooting activities are conducted in a safe and lawful manner.
The recent incidents involving homes damaged by stray rounds serve as a serious reminder that a single unsafe shot can have devastating consequences. We urge all firearm owners to take the time to evaluate their shooting locations and safety measures before pulling the trigger.
A safe shooting environment protects not only the shooter, but also neighbors, families, and the entire community.
The Lycoming Regional Police Department appreciates your cooperation and commitment to responsible firearm ownership and safety.
Stay safe. Know your target. Know what is beyond it.
