On February 3, 2026, at approximately 9:30 a.m., an officer with the Lycoming Regional Police Department observed a vehicle being operated recklessly in the Garden View area of Old Lycoming Township. The vehicle came to an abrupt stop in the middle of the roadway, prompting the officer to investigate.
Officer Hughes made contact with the driver, who did not possess a valid driver’s license. The driver indicated he was attempting to take his passenger to school. During the interaction, the officer detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver admitted to having smoked marijuana prior to driving and subsequently performed poorly on standard field sobriety tests. He was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.
A juvenile passenger—related to the driver—was safely transferred to a responsible adult and transported to school to ensure their well‑being.
The department extends sincere kudos to Officer Hughes for her attentiveness and swift action. Her vigilance prevented the potentially dangerous situation from escalating and helped keep our roadways safer for everyone.
All persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
