A resident called the Columbia Borough Police Department to report that they received a phone call from a local County Sheriff's Department that they did not show up for jury duty. The caller told them that if they paid a certain amount of money they won't be arrested. *Note* This is a typical scam used to target people for money. Official notice from Counties for jury duty are mailed on a official document. The callers generally want money wired, Prepaid Visa Cards or Itunes cards. Never give any financial information over the phone including your Social Security numbers or other personal information. Other phone scams are Microsoft employees stating that you have a virus on your computer, the IRS calling, or a relative that may be incarcerated in another country, and the lottery from another country. Please do not send any money transfers via Western Union or give them the card numbers from activated prepaid Visa cards or Itunes cash cards. Some of the scams are outside the country and are difficult for Law Enforcement to investigate.
