This month of October is recognized nationally, regionally, and locally as Domestic Violence ("DV") Awareness month. Within the Commonwealth, many counties and organizations are holding events or distributing educational literature. In Erie County, several organizations are participating, some of which are listed below.
One local resource, "SafeNet," offers shelter, counseling, legal representation, and other services to DV victims and is celebrating this month with multiple events, including a Boo Bingo and Candlelight vigil held earlier this week. Moreover, SafeNet partnered with Erie Police Department to wrap purple ribbons around parking meters downtown on Monday. Per SafeNet's research, approximately one in three women are affected by domestic violence. SafeNet has a 24/7 Crisis Hotline at (814) 454-8161. One can also reach out for resources or fundraising opportunities (see SafeNet website URL and office number below).
On Thursday October 16 is National "Wear Purple" Day. So, start picking out your clothes now so that we can raise awareness and show support for victims of DV! You can also do so by adding the following hashtag to your social media posts, particularly those related to any resources or events that you or your organization are holding-- "WithSurvivors"
Additionally, Erie VA Medical Center is holding a free Relationship Health Fair on October 27 from 10AM to 12PM on the Second Floor Conference Room at its own facility. 135 East 28th Street, Erie, PA 16504. This is an informative event for Vets, family members, caregivers, and employees. There will be multiple agencies there distributing materials to attendees. For any questions regarding the event or Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Programs call (814) 572-7872 or email holly.pilarski@va.gov.
There is also a PurpleOne virtual training with Safe Journey next month on November 13 from 8AM to 12:30PM. Registration is at purpleone.org. Training is focused on recognizing signs of DV, responding appropriately, and referring victims to support services. It will feature guest speakers from the Gabby Petito Foundation.
