Cameron Adams, who solicited funds from local businesses for a fictitious youth baseball travel team, has pleaded guilty to Theft by Deception and Receiving Stolen Property, both felonies of the third degree.
Adams was previously banned from fundraising activities in a 2012 civil contempt order from Judge Shad Connelly, but he continued to solicit donations for the non-existent team, pocketing the money for his personal use.
On the morning of jury selection, Adams pleaded guilty to the charges, avoiding a trial scheduled for July. President Judge Mead sentenced him to 6-23 months in the Erie County Prison, followed by 5 years' probation.
In addition to his sentence, Adams was ordered to pay $17,795 in restitution to the 24 businesses and individuals who donated to the fictitious team. He will also undergo mental health and drug/alcohol evaluations as part of his sentence.
This outcome serves as a reminder that fraudulent activities will not be tolerated in our community. The Erie County District Attorney's Office is committed to holding individuals accountable for their actions and ensuring that justice is served.
