During the months of July and August the Lower Paxton Township Bureau of Police will be conducting Operation Colonial Crush. This 6-week aggressive speed enforcement initiative is being conducted because of the results of a recent traffic study that was initiated due to complaints received from residents.
Operation Colonial Crush will primarily focus on Colonial Road between the Interstate 81 bridge and Linglestown Road with a high emphasis on speed-related violations. However, Officers will be enforcing all traffic violations in the area. Additional signage has been placed on Colonial Road to further warn motorists of the already posted 35 mph speed limit.
Speed and volume data on Colonial Road was collected and showed that over 80,000 vehicles are traveling on Colonial Road weekly. Of those 80,000 vehicles over 32,000 vehicles were traveling at speeds on Colonial Road that would allow them to be stopped for exceeding the posted 35 mph speed limit. In addition to the high number of vehicles exceeding the posted speed limit there were 148 crashes on Colonial Road in the targeted area over the past 5 years.
The goal of Operation Colonial Crush is to lower the overall speed of vehicles on Colonial Road and increase the safety of motorists, passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists and others through enforcement and officer presence. After this 6-week operation, the Bureau of Police and the Traffic Safety Officers will assess the effectiveness and impact of the enforcement efforts and determine what, if any, additional measures will be taken. Drive safe and slow down.
