The Harrisburg Police have recently received information of a phone scam, involving individuals posing as Harrisburg Police/Law Enforcement Officers. Some are reported to use the names of actual Police Officers. The caller claims that the recipient missed a court appearance or has been charged with a crime. The caller then demands that the recipient pay fines and costs to avoid being arrested.
Generally, fines and costs are assessed and collected by the Courts, not the Police. If you receive a call similar to this, please ask for an incident number as well as the Officers name and badge number. You can confirm the identity of the individual calling, by contacting the Dauphin County Communication Center using the non-emergency number (717) 558-6900. Ask to speak to someone from the agency the caller claims to be representing.
Under no circumstances should you purchase gift cards, vouchers or similar forms of payment. Do not disclose personal information unless you are certain you are speaking to an actual Law Enforcement Officer.
