On December 21, 2023, Cumberland County District Attorney Seán M. McCormack was sworn in to his first full four-year term as the county’s elected District Attorney on Thursday, December 21, 2023 by Judge Michelle Sibert. McCormack was appointed on January 3, 2022, to finish the remaining two years of former District Attorney M.L. Skip Ebert, who retired on December 31, 2021. On November 7th of this year, McCormack was elected to begin his own four-year term as District Attorney in 2024.
McCormack joined the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office in March of 2020 as the Chief of the District Attorney's Trial Division. He brought a wealth of experience to the office after serving in the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office for 30 years. While in Dauphin County, he served as the Chief of the Child Abuse Prosecution Unit for close to 25 years. Upon Ebert’s pending retirement in 2021, PennLive commented on McCormack as his successor: “McCormack came to Ebert’s staff after 30 years in the Dauphin County district attorney’s office, where he developed a reputation as one of the state’s leading crusaders against child abuse.” McCormack is a graduate of Delaware Law School of Widener University (JD), Villanova University (BA) and Delaware County Community College (AA).
McCormack has received a number of awards over the years for his work as a prosecutor. He was the recipient of the 2019 Leroy Zimmerman Outstanding Dauphin County Prosecutor of the Year Award and in 2010 received the Outstanding Victim Service Award from the Dauphin County Victim Witness Assistance Program. He was also named the 2008 Children’s Resource Center Joseph Allegrini Children’s Hero Award recipient, as well as the 1998 Samuel A. Yeagley, Jr., Memorial Award for his work in the area of child abuse prosecutions.
In May of 2023, Governor Josh Shapiro appointed McCormack to the Victims Services Advisory Committee at the Pennsylvania Commission of Crime and Delinquency (PCCD). McCormack also serves as a member on PCCD’s Child Advocacy Center Advisory Committee. He proudly served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard for 21 years holding the rank of major when he retired in 2007. McCormack serves on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Institute and is a member of its Education and Training Committee. McCormack also currently serves as the Chair of the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association’s Special Victims Prosecutor’s Network.
