A Warminster woman was charged today with killing her 8-year-old son and injuring two adults while driving drunk April 7 in Upper Southampton Township.

Kelly Anne Colbridge, 37, of the 100 block of Deb Lane, faces an array of charges, including homicide by vehicle while DUI and aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, in the head-on crash that killed her son and injured a married couple in the other vehicle.

Colbridge’s blood alcohol concentration was measured at .168 percent after the crash, more than twice the legal limit for driving, according to an affidavit of probable cause (attached below).

Also in her blood, the affidavit said, was Clonazepam, an anti-anxiety sedative, and Carisprodol, a muscle relaxant. The combination of alcohol and drugs impaired Colbridge’s ability to drive safely and helped cause the collision, the affidavit said.

She was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge William J. Benz, who tentatively scheduled a preliminary hearing for May 10. Bail was set at $100,000 unsecured, pending a bail hearing when Colbridge is released from a medical facility.

The crash occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, in the 300 block of Street Road.

The affidavit said a westbound Dodge Avenger sedan driven by Colbridge crossed a center turn lane into the eastbound lanes, striking a Kia Sorento SUV driven by John Burns of Levittown and occupied by his wife, Debbie.

“The force of the impact caused catastrophic damage to the Dodge and significant damage to the Kia,” the affidavit said.

Trapped inside her vehicle, Colbridge called out for emergency responders to help her, but never mentioned her child in the back seat, the affidavit said. The boy is identified as “DK” in the court records.

“Officers were not aware of a child in the rear of the vehicle until they looked in the back and observed DK, who was found to be in critical condition,” the affidavit said.

DK, whose spine was separated from his skull, was taken by ambulance to Abington Hospital, then flown by helicopter to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he died April 10, the affidavit said.

John and Debbie Burns, who had been headed home from a party in Warminster, suffered serious injuries and were taken to Abington Hospital, where Mrs. Burns underwent emergency surgery, the affidavit said.

Colbridge, who suffered several broken bones and a punctured lung, was taken to St. Mary Medical Center, where she was interviewed by police the day after the crash.

According to the affidavit, she said she had been with her son at a party at Feasterville Bowlero, where she had a few alcoholic drinks. On the way home, she told police, the last thing she remembered was speaking in hands-free mode to her boyfriend on the telephone.

Fire company personnel found a handbag containing controlled substances including Suboxone strips and clonazepam pills, the affidavit said, and a subsequent police search of both vehicles found marijuana and paraphernalia used to smoke marijuana inside Colbridge’s sedan.

Investigators found no mechanical or roadway issues that could have contributed to the crash, the affidavit said.

The crash was investigated by the Upper Southampton Township Police Department and the District Attorney’s Crash Investigation Team.

The case has been assigned for prosecution to Deputy District Attorney Robert D. James, Chief of the Homicide by Vehicle Division.

Criminal charges are allegations subject to proof in court. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
