The first day of school is almost here! Both the Wyomissing Area School District and Wilson School District will be welcoming students back beginning Monday, August 24.

That means more school buses, more children walking and biking, and more students crossing our roads. Let’s all do our part to make sure everyone gets to and from school safely.

DRIVERS — WATCH FOR SCHOOL BUSES
• Slow down and be alert when you see a school bus.
• Stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
• Never pass a stopped school bus.
• Watch carefully for children who may be crossing the road or walking near the bus.
• Give yourself extra time in the morning and afternoon — expect school traffic and bus stops.

DRIVERS — WATCH FOR WALKING STUDENTS
• Slowdown in neighborhoods and around school zones.
• Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and give them plenty of time to cross.
• Put the phone down and keep your attention on the road.
• Look carefully at intersections, driveways, and areas where children may be walking.

STUDENTS — WALK SAFELY
• Use sidewalks and designated walking routes whenever possible.
• Cross streets at crosswalks and intersections.
• Look left, right, then left again before crossing.
• Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the roadway.
• Stay alert — put phones and headphones away when crossing streets.
• Walk with a buddy whenever possible and follow crossing guards’ directions.

A NEW SCHOOL YEAR MEANS A NEW ROUTINE FOR EVERYONE.
