Upon arrival, officers located Christopher Gardin, 18, 112 Tremont St., suffering from a gunshot
wound. He was transported by Davidson County EMS to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital,
where he is currently listed in stable condition.
Officers also located Cynthia Duff, 69, 112 Tremont St., inside the residence, suffering from a gunshot
wound. Despite life-saving efforts by officers, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The suspect, Clarence Taft Duff, 71, 112 Tremont St., left the scene prior to law enforcement arrival.
Responding officers quickly located his vehicle in the 500 block of National Highway and took him
into custody at approximately 8:09 p.m.
Clarence Taft Duff has been charged with:
• Murder
• Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, Inflicting Serious Injury
• Discharging a Firearm Within City Limits
Duff is currently being held without bond in the Davidson County Jail.
This appears to be an isolated domestic-related incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The investigation remains active, and no further details, including a motive, are being released at this
