The Gray County Sheriff's Office is committed to promoting road safety and reducing the risk of accidents on our highways. As part of this effort, we would like to remind the public about the importance of complying with Kansas' Move Over Law.
This law requires drivers to slow down or move over when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle with its lights flashing. This includes police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, and tow trucks. The purpose of this law is to provide a safe environment for emergency responders and roadside workers who are vulnerable to being struck by passing vehicles.
When approaching a stationary emergency vehicle, drivers should:
Upon the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle making use of emergency lights and siren, the driver of every other vehicle shall do the following unless otherwise directed by a law enforcement officer:
(1) Yield the right-of-way;
(2) Immediately drive to a position parallel to and as close as possible to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway clear of any intersection; and
(3) Stop and remain in such position until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed.
Failure to comply with the Move Over Law can result in serious consequences, including fines and even criminal charges. More importantly, it can put lives at risk.
We urge all drivers to be aware of their surroundings and take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of emergency responders and roadside workers. Let's work together to make our roads safer for everyone.
If you have any questions or concerns about the Move Over Law, please don't hesitate to contact the Gray County Sheriff's Office 620-855-3916.
