On Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 11:07 PM El Paso Police responded to a report of a crash at 98 S Elm Street. The vehicle, a White 2016 Subaru Forrester, was found unoccupied in the backyard with the engine running. Witnesses reported that a male suspect fled the scene on foot towards CVS Pharmacy (137 W Front Street, El Paso, IL).
Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been stolen in Washington, IL, involved in a reckless driving incident on Route 24 reaching speeds of 100 MPH, and had fled the scene of an accident in Tazewell County. El Paso Police officers, with the assistance of the Woodford County Sheriff's Office, established a perimeter and began canvassing the area for the suspect.
During the search, a Black 2017 Buick Enclave was spotted driving erratically within the perimeter. The vehicle was pursued through town, and ended on Rt. 251 south when the driver, Cameron Schnaiter (19), lost control of the vehicle, which rolled violently into a field and caught fire. Schnaiter was thrown from the vehicle and sustained several injuries. He was transported to Carle BroMenn Medical Center for treatment.
