The DeLand Police Department has deactivated all of its Flock Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) in compliance with the Florida Department of Transportation’s recent directive. Like many of my law enforcement colleagues across the state, I have real concerns about the loss of this very important investigative tool and the value it represents in advancing public safety, solving crimes, and saving lives. These  ALPRs help law enforcement locate stolen vehicles, suspects, missing children, and the elderly. We hope that state leaders will take this opportunity to establish clear legislative guardrails that address the public’s privacy concerns and restore confidence in how this technology is used. If that work gets done, we look forward to being able to put these tools back to work for the community.
