As the kiddos prepare to go trick or treating this weekend, it's important to keep safety in mind. 

Here are some tips from the National Safety Council:

• Be sure all costumes, wigs and accessories are fire-resistant.
• If children are allowed out after dark, outfit their costumes with reflective tape or give them glow sticks
• A responsible adult should accompany young children while out in neighborhoods
• If older children are going alone, plan and review an acceptable route.
• Agree on a specific time children should return home
• Teach your children never to enter a stranger's car or home

For motorists:

• Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs
• Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully
• At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing
• Discourage new and inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween
