11/26/25- On November 25, 2025, at approximately 5:09 p.m., officers from the DeLand Police Department responded to 104 Curry Rise Court regarding a 911 hang-up call. Upon arrival, the responding officer made contact with the resident, Melissa Kline (42), who remained inside the home and refused to exit to speak with officers.
While the officer attempted to encourage Kline to come outside, Kline retrieved a handgun from underneath her bathrobe and placed it under her chin. The officer immediately sought cover and requested additional units. Moments later, while positioned behind Kline’s vehicle, the officer heard a loud “bang,” consistent with a gunshot fired from inside the residence. The officer reported being struck by what was believed to be shrapnel from the initial gunshot, resulting in a minor abrasion to the neck. As officers waited for additional resources, a second “bang” was heard, later confirmed to be another gunshot fired from within the residence.
At approximately 6:22 p.m., after negotiations and continued communication attempts, Kline voluntarily surrendered and was safely taken into custody by DeLand Police Department officers without further incident. Both Kline and the officer who sustained the minor abrasion were evaluated and cleared by medical personnel at the scene.
Kline was charged with Aggravated Assault (2 counts), Reckless Discharge of a Firearm (2 counts), and Resisting Arrest Without Violence (2 counts). She was transported to the Volusia County Jail without incident.
