A report of gunfire led DeLand Police to a male with a gunshot wound, and, ultimately, to the arrest of two individuals. One male was charged with a loaded handgun and narcotics and the other for tampering with evidence and a traffic offense.
At 11:38 p.m. Monday, DeLand Police responded to a report of gunfire in the 400 block of W. Walts Avenue. Shortly after the call, an adult male arrived at Advent Health DeLand with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the foot.
The DeLand Police Department Criminal Investigations Division responded to W. Walts Avenue and located evidence consistent with a shooting. Detectives subsequently obtained a search warrant for a nearby residence as part of the investigation.
Detectives also learned a vehicle had been used in conjunction with the shooting and located it Tuesday afternoon near W. Minnesota Avenue and N. Woodland Blvd. Two individuals exited the vehicle, discarded a black satchel, and attempted to elude police by blending in with nearby pedestrians. They were unsuccessful.
Kavon Banks, 19, and Cameron Cuthrell, 21, were arrested, charged and booked into the Volusia County Jail. Inside the satchel, officers located a loaded handgun, 141 grams of fentanyl, approximately $3,000 in cash, cannabis and narcotic paraphernalia.
Banks of Rex, GA, was charged with:
· Trafficking in Fentanyl (28 grams or more)
· Possession of a firearm on school property
· Obstruction without violence
· Possession of cannabis (not more than 20 grams)
· Advertise drug paraphernalia
Cuthrell, of Jacksonville, FL, was charged with:
· Tampering with evidence
· Driving without a driver’s license
The male with the gunshot wound to the foot was identified as Brent Terrell Stephens age 44 of DeLand, Florida. He was also arrested on the following outstanding warrants: Trafficking Cocaine (28-200g), Trafficking Fentanyl (4-14g), Possession of Cannabis < 20 g, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Driving While License Is Cancelled/Revoked. He was booked into the Volusia County Jail after receiving medical treatment.
