On August 21, 2024 at 2:44 p.m., Trinidad Police Department Officers were attempting to locate Randy Sanchez in the 100 block of Aguilar Ct. regarding a warrant for his arrest for distributing fentanyl to a 13-year-old. Officers spotted Sanchez in front of 104 Aguilar Ct. As officers approached, Sanchez ran into 104 Aguilar Ct. and two officers attempted to hold perimeter of the residence awaiting assistance from more officers. A short time later a search warrant was secured for 104 Aguilar Ct. and the swat team was activated.
Numerous verbal attempts to contact Sanchez were made asking him to peacefully surrender. Officers received no response. Officers received information Randy could have escaped and ran next door to 106 Aguilar Ct. Officers gained verbal consent to search 106 Aguilar, which they did twice. Officers deployed a noise flash diversionary device to rouse Sanchez from the residence which garnered no response. No firearms were discharged during this event.
Chemical munitions were then sent into 104 Aguilar Ct. after which time officers received no response to the chemical munitions. Officers made entry into the residence at 5:35 pm and conducted a thorough search but were unable to locate anyone inside. A drone was then deployed into the attic and basement crawlspace areas of 104 Aguilar Ct., which were unsafe for officers to enter. No one was found in those places.
Additional information became available leading officers back to 106 Aguilar Ct. where verbal consent to search was again obtained. Officer located a hidden door to the basement crawlspace at which time they encountered Sanchez. At 10:30 pm, Sanchez was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Las Animas County jail where he was booked on the following charges: Unlawful, distribution, manufacturing, dispensing, sale or possession of controlled substance, schedule I or II, a class 1 drug felony and second degree contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a class 1 misdemeanor. He is being held on a $50,000 cash only bond.
