Every year, national vehicle theft data reveals a list of the most frequently stolen vehicles in America. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the Hyundai Elantra, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and Honda Civic ranked among the most stolen vehicles in the United States in 2025. But being on the list doesn't necessarily mean a vehicle is easy to steal. "Many of the vehicles that appear on these lists are simply very common on American roads," said Steve Wheeler, executive director of the Pennsylvania Auto Theft Prevention Authority. "When there are more of a particular make and model on the road, there are naturally more opportunities for theft." In some cases, thieves target vehicles because they are in high demand for parts. In others, older models may lack newer anti-theft technology found in today's vehicles. Certain Hyundai and Kia models became popular targets in recent years due to a widely publicized security vulnerability, but thefts involving those vehicles have declined as manufacturers introduced software updates and other anti-theft measures. The good news is that vehicle theft is declining nationwide. Still, thousands of vehicles are stolen every year, and most thefts continue to be crimes of opportunity. No matter what you drive, you can reduce your risk by: Locking your vehicle every time you park. Taking your keys or key fob with you. Never leaving a vehicle running and unattended. Parking in well-lit, highly visible locations. Removing valuables from plain sight. "The most effective anti-theft device is still an attentive owner," Wheeler said. "A locked vehicle with no keys inside is far less attractive to a thief than one that offers an easy opportunity." Whether your vehicle appears on a top-theft list or not, taking a few seconds to secure it can help prevent a costly and frustrating crime.
