Each summer, the Williamsport Bureau of Police experiences an increase in calls for service, including a significant rise in juvenile-related incidents. In response, the Department is launching the Juvenile Intervention & Prevention Initiative to proactively address these concerns and enhance public safety.

As part of this initiative, School Resource Officers (SROs) will remain assigned to juvenile-focused duties throughout the summer rather than returning to regular patrol assignments. SROs are uniquely positioned for this role because they work closely with students during the school year, are familiar with many of the juveniles involved in recurring issues, and have established relationships with both students and their families. The initiative will also provide opportunities for accountability and positive engagement, as SROs will oversee and coordinate community service activities performed by juvenile offenders.

The initiative will take a proactive approach by intervening early, engaging with juveniles and their families, coordinating community service opportunities, and utilizing enforcement when necessary. The goal is to address problems before they escalate while promoting positive outcomes and improving quality of life throughout the community.

A key component of the initiative is the involvement of parents and guardians. When issues arise, officers will make every reasonable effort to notify parents or guardians of their children’s conduct so concerns can be addressed quickly and appropriate corrective action can be taken.

This initiative is only one part of a broader approach to addressing juvenile-related issues in Williamsport. While prevention and intervention are important, they do not replace enforcement. Juveniles who engage in criminal activity will be held accountable and may face criminal charges. Parents and guardians may also face legal consequences when warranted. Additionally, parents and guardians should be aware that they may be civilly liable for injuries or property damage caused by their children.

Through proactive engagement, parental involvement, community partnerships, and appropriate enforcement, the Williamsport Bureau of Police remains committed to reducing juvenile-related incidents, improving public safety, and making this a safe summer for everyone.
