North Charleston Police Department School Resource Officers responded to Chicora Elementary after being notified that a handgun was recovered today. Upon arrival, officers learned that a tip was received by staff about a handgun being inside a student’s bookbag. Staff secured the bookbag at which time the School Security Officer confirmed the handgun was inside the bookbag and North Charleston Police were notified. A 9 mm handgun was recovered, and there is no indication that any threats were made in connection with the firearm.

The student was taken into custody without incident and charged with possessing a weapon on school property and being a minor in possession of a firearm. The North Charleston Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and staff within our community.
