Last night at the City Commission Meeting, the DeLand Police Department proudly pinned three new officers. Please join us in welcoming them to the badge.
Officer Garrett Shurdom was sworn in on March 23. A DeLand native and DeLand High School graduate, Garrett grew up surrounded by law enforcement. His father served as a K9 officer with the Casselberry Police Department, and his uncle was a SWAT Commander with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office. Their example shaped him, and now he is carrying that legacy forward right here in the community where he grew up.
Officer Lucas Formel was sworn in on March 30. Lucas was raised in DeLand before joining the U.S. Navy in 2013. After completing his service, he spent seven years with the Pensacola Police Department before he and his wife, Ashley, decided to return to DeLand for a closer family connection. We are glad the road brought him home.
Officer Benjamin Orden was sworn in on April 27. A 2022 DeLand High School graduate, Benjamin went on to complete his two-year degree at Daytona State College before joining the department. Disciplined, focused, and driven by a genuine desire to serve his community, he is ready to get to work.
Welcome to the DeLand Police Department, Officers Shurdom, Formel, and Orden. This community is lucky to have you.
