Please join the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) in congratulating Joseph Cerroni, recipient of the Civilian Achievement Award, for saving a juvenile’s life in December 2025.
On December 31, just before 1 p.m., officers were dispatched to I-26 westbound near the Exit 211 off-ramp in reference to a juvenile jumping from a moving vehicle. Upon arrival, officers made contact with Charleston County deputies and several witnesses on scene.
One witness, identified as Mr. Cerroni, reported that he was traveling behind a vehicle in lane three at approximately 60 miles per hour when he saw a juvenile exit the moving vehicle. The juvenile landed on the roadway, bounced approximately five feet into the air, and then tumbled and rolled about 25 yards into the median of I-26.
Without hesitation, Mr. Cerroni pulled his vehicle to the side of the roadway and positioned his truck in front of the juvenile to shield him from oncoming traffic. He then spoke with the juvenile and remained by his side, working to calm and console him. Mr. Cerroni stayed with the juvenile until he noticed the juvenile’s mother approaching. At that time, the juvenile broke free and attempted to run back into moving traffic. Mr. Cerroni quickly intervened, taking the juvenile safely to the ground and holding him there until deputies arrived to assist.
It was later learned that the juvenile has a history of mental health issues. He was transported to a local hospital for further medical evaluation and treatment.
Due to the brave and heroic actions of Mr. Cerroni, the juvenile’s life was saved. His quick thinking, selflessness, and courage exemplify the very best of our community.
Great job, Mr. Cerroni!
