North Charleston Police arrested a 27-year-old man Wednesday night after he allegedly attempted to abduct a child and broke into an apartment, then threatened officers. Around 11:30 p.m., officers responded to a reported home invasion in progress, with dispatch indicating the suspect was trying to take a child and had broken a living room window.
Officers detained the suspect, identified as Kimani Devaughntez Gandy, outside the apartment. According to police, a woman at the residence said Gandy is the father of her two-year-old daughter and attempted to take the child despite being told it was too late and cold. Gandy allegedly pounded on the door and used a baby stroller to break a window, suffering a cut to his hand.
The tenant said Gandy is known to be violent and was not allowed at the residence. Investigators believe he intended to abduct the child and forcibly enter the apartment during nighttime hours. After his arrest, Gandy allegedly became hostile, kicked a patrol vehicle, and threatened two officers.
Gandy was charged with first-degree burglary and threatening the life of a public official and was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center.
