North Charleston Police Department officers arrested a 37-year-old man Monday afternoon after he allegedly assaulted a woman and fought with a responding officer.
Just after 3 p.m., an officer responded to a home on Cambridge Avenue following a report of an assault. Dispatch advised that a female could be heard yelling for help. Upon arrival, the officer observed two juveniles crying in the front yard.
When the officer entered the residence, he heard the victim screaming and saw the suspect on top of her, allegedly strangling her with both hands while pinning her to a bed. According to the incident report, the suspect refused commands to stop and continued restraining the victim.
The officer tackled the suspect off the victim, at which point the suspect allegedly punched the officer in the side and pinned him against a wall. The suspect then attempted to grab the officer’s holsters, which contained his department-issued firearm and Taser. The officer struck the suspect several times to gain control.
Backup officers arrived shortly thereafter, and the suspect was taken into custody.
The suspect was identified as Dennis Michael Oliver, 37. He was charged with unlawful taking of a firearm, resisting arrest, and unlawful conduct toward a child. Oliver was transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center.
