At the Columbia Borough Council meeting on May 13, 2025, Council voted to adopt an ordinance creating a Senior Citizen Parking Program in the Borough. The ordinance will allow residents who are 65 or older to receive a permit (one vehicle per household) for free parking in metered zones or borough-owned lots, entitling them to one free hour of parking per location.
The Senior Citizen Parking Permit shall not be valid during the time street sweeping is scheduled in an area designated for parking with the Senior Citizen Parking Permit. Handicap parking spaces may only be used by those with a handicap placard or plate.
The Borough is planning to phase out traditional parking meters over the next few years making all parking fees payable electronically. The senior citizen parking program will allow seniors, who may not be technically savvy, to continue enjoying the Borough's downtown.
Permits are now available at the Borough Office located at 308 Locust Street. The permit sticker will need to be displayed at the bottom of the front passenger side window and expires on December 31st of each year.
