The DeLand Police Department wants everyone to have a safe and fun Halloween, so we want to remind the community about the importance of practicing safety.
Mainstreet DeLand’s event Monsters on Mainstreet will be held Halloween night from 6 - 8 p.m. in Downtown DeLand and offers a safe environment for kids free of vehicle traffic.
If you plan to trick-or-treat in your neighborhood, here are some practical tips from the American Safety Council:
For Trick-or-Treaters
- Stay in well-lit areas and avoid dark alleys and streets.
- Stick with friends when out trick-or-treating or attending events.
- Wear costumes that are visible to drivers and other pedestrians.
- Wear comfortable shoes and carry a flashlight for visibility.
- Only visit homes with porch lights turned on for trick or treating.
- Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
- Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks whenever possible.
For Motorists
- Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs
- Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully
- At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing
- Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween
We hope that our residents take advantage of these tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween in DeLand.
