During five days last week, NCPD patrol officers confiscated six firearms that were illegally carried or unlawfully possessed. Last Tuesday, an officer responded to a home on Chestnut Street regarding a juvenile suspect who had a pickup order from Probation and Parole. The suspect refused to stop running and repeatedly reached into his waistband, apparently for a gun. The officer deployed a taser, but it had no effect. After apprehending the suspect, the officer conducted a pat-down and discovered a loaded handgun. The juvenile was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun and possession of a stolen firearm. He was taken to the Charleston County Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).
On the same day, officers were called to Ebony Court for a report of a robbery. The juvenile victim reported that during a drug transaction, the suspect saw she had a gun and demanded it at gunpoint. An NCPD K-9 officer later located the firearm that the victim claimed was stolen from her. The juvenile victim was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun and was released to her guardian under a custodial promise.
On Friday, officers responded to a home on Lake Moultrie Drive, where a family member expressed concern that another juvenile had brought a gun into the house. Officers found the juvenile in a car, where he began reaching under the driver's seat. Upon investigation, they discovered a semi-automatic handgun with live rounds in the magazine and an additional five rounds in his backpack. The teen was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor and taken to Charleston County DJJ.
On Saturday, officers conducted a traffic stop on a driver who was speeding at 57 miles per hour in a 40-mile-per-hour zone. The investigation revealed that the suspect had an active warrant with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office. During a search of the vehicle, officers found two handguns. The suspect, 41-year-old Dewayne Breland, was charged with being a felon in possession of two firearms.
Also on Saturday, officers responded to a report on Realm Street regarding an argument. A juvenile informed officers that his mother had pointed a gun at him and threatened to kill him. The suspect, 34-year-old Tamesha Wigfall, was charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.
