Two men were arrested Wednesday afternoon following a reported burglary and brief standoff in a North Charleston neighborhood.
According to the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD), officers responded to a burglary call on Kent Avenue around 1:15 p.m. after a homeowner reported the incident. Upon arrival, officers spotted a shirtless man fleeing the scene on foot. The suspect jumped a fence, prompting police to establish a perimeter.
Investigators received information that the suspect may have taken refuge at a home on Bailey Drive. Officers made contact with a man working on a vehicle in the backyard, who allowed them to search the garage but declined a K-9 search and then stopped cooperating.
The suspect’s mother later arrived on the scene and attempted to persuade him to surrender, but was unsuccessful. NCPD deployed a drone team to survey the area and monitor a vehicle trunk at the location. Drone footage revealed the suspect hiding in the garage and briefly appearing in the doorway.
Officers again attempted to call the suspect out, but he refused to comply. A K-9 unit was then deployed into the garage, successfully flushing the suspect out.
The man, identified as 18-year-old Gerbrell Deangelo Choice, was taken into custody and charged with Burglary in the 2nd Degree.
The second man at the residence, identified as 58-year-old Robert Griffin, was also arrested and charged with Accessory After the Fact to a Felony for allegedly aiding the suspect in avoiding arrest.
Both Choice and Griffin were booked into the Charleston County Detention Center.
