On Monday, July 14, 2025, at approximately 7:00 PM, an off-duty police officer working security at the Walmart located at 7400 Rivers Avenue was alerted by store associates regarding a customer suspected of attempting a fraudulent return. Store personnel requested that the individual be placed on trespass notice and removed from the premises.
As the officer was speaking with staff, the individual became aware of the situation and attempted to flee the store. The officer pursued the suspect, who exited through an emergency door. During the pursuit, the suspect brandished a firearm at the officer. In response to the immediate threat, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking the individual.
Assisting officers promptly rendered medical aid on the scene. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. The extent of the suspect’s injuries is currently unknown.
In accordance with protocol, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was immediately notified and is actively conducting an on-site investigation. The officer involved will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
