The York City Police Department has partnered with York College of Pennsylvania in order to develop a better understanding of the low application rate for under-represented persons (i.e., women and racial minorities). Dr. Kirsten L. Witherup and a team of student researchers designed and implemented two survey questionnaires. The first was distributed to recent applicants of the York City Police Department who initiated the process and did not follow through with testing completion. The second was sent to individuals enrolled in a criminal justice or related program considering law enforcement as a career. During the spring 2020 semester, four students enrolled in an Independent Study will assist with the second phase of this work by conducting two focus groups. The project will culminate in a presentation and report of findings to the Department and other interested stakeholders.
