Unity Township, PA -- Pennsylvania State Police is assisting the Secret Service to investigate a multi-million-dollar theft scheme that targeted a victim in Unity Township.
The victim, of Unity Township, told authorities the individual posed as someone with the Federal Trade Commission and the scam resulted in the loss of $5 million.
Pennsylvania State Police was notified of the fraud investigation by the U.S. Secret Service in late February.
The victim first responded to text messages regarding a PayPal transaction which resulted in the victim being contacted again by an individual posing as the Federal Trade Commission.
The victim was first asked to provide cash and then was asked to purchase gold bars.
The completed transactions occurred in the Unity Township area.
The Secret Service, with the assistance of the Pennsylvania State Police, is asking any victim of similar circumstances, regardless of a completed transaction, please contact state police at 724-832-3288.
Law enforcement continues to encourage potential victims to report suspicious activity, never give out personal information, banking information, and never offer payments without consulting a credible agency first.
