Greensburg, PA -- Greensburg Police, in cooperation with the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office, issued arrest warrants for a man and woman accused of abandoning a dog and 2 cats.
Police were called to a home on Wood Street on March 29, 2023, after the landlord discovered injured and abandoned animals inside the property.
Anthony Atkins and Danielle Toporzycki were kicked out of the Wood Street house for illegally staying there.
Atkins and Toporzycki asked a neighbor to take them to U-Haul, packed up their apartment and left for Shippensburg, according to police.
A dog was found in the basement of the home in a crate too small, along with two cats with head injuries. One of the cats’ legs was broken so badly, its leg had to be amputated.
When contacted by phone, Atkins allegedly blamed the cats’ injuries on the dog being too rough with them.
Toporzycki denied knowing anything about the condition of the animals.
Both cats require ongoing veterinary care and are still unable to walk, stand, drink or eat without having balance issues due to head trauma.
Two veterinarians who examined the cats determined the injuries are not consistent with a dog attack.
Atkins and Toporzycki are both charged with conspiracy, aggravated cruelty to animals, cruelty to animals and neglect of animals.
Disclaimer: To the extent that pending criminal matters are discussed, all such charges are merely accusations and all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
